Would you be interested in driving faster without changing the car?
It's hard to imagine a competitive sports person or team not having a coach isn't it? Think about your favourite League or Soccer team; Tennis Player; Swimmer; Cricket team; Golfer - they all have coaches, some have several specialist coaches. These are not just elite sports people, but people who play sport for fitness and fun, they have coaches too, and they also train a least weekly.
What about Motor Racing?
Generally speaking, someone interested in motorsport may do some track days with a reputable track school or do a high performance driving course before they get started - and that's a great thing to do. Unfortunately it's generally where it starts and ends, no more training / coaching, it's all seat of the pants and paddock talk. By the way have you ever seen a newcomer who gets their car onto the track for the first time with no instruction and ends up in a wall or on their roof?
Certainly professional teams have coaches, specialist psychologists, doctors, mentors etc, but in Australia driver development for people already in the sport is limited. Of course one of the main differences between Motor Sport and others is the cost - it's ridiculously expensive. Racers will spend thousands upon thousands of dollars in the attempt to achieve even the smallest advantage. What about the Driver? How important is the Driver? How would you feel if another driver jumped in your car and beat your best time by 2 seconds - after just 3 laps? The truth is that there is more time to be gained through professional driver coaching and at much less cost than almost anything else.
